Frequently Asked Questions
The following are some of the questions which new and prospective members frequently ask :
| Q. | Is Harrow Coffee Pot a dating organisation? |
| A. |
No, Harrow Coffee Pot is a social club, aiming to bring people together for a wide range of social events. Members have the opportunity to make many new acquaintances, some of whom become new friends. Inevitably many couples have met through the club, but this is a by-product of club membership and not its purpose.
|
| Q. | What is the age profile of Harrow Coffee Pot? |
| A. |
The club hopes to attract male and female members upto forty five years of age.
|
| Q. | What is the ratio of men and women members in the club? |
| A. |
Throughout the year the mix of gender is very even staying at around 50-50.
|
| Q. | I have a physical disability, how is this taken into consideration when planning events on the programme? |
| A. | The
host or committee member will take into account disability access to public
venues when planning events and, where possible, make the necessary
arrangements to make it accessible for everyone to attend. However, with
events which are held in members homes, adjustments may be very limited.
Hosts can always be telephoned before an event for more information.
|
| Q. | I don't have my own transport, how does the club try to make it as easy as possible for me to attend events? |
| A. |
Most events are near underground or British Rail stations or on other transport routes. Where possible, these are noted on the programme. As you get to know people, they may offer you lifts to and from events, but this cannot be expected as a part of the membership to the club. |
| Q. | Can I get any financial help with hosting an event? |
| A. |
For most events held in your own home, such as coffee or games evenings or a party, you can make a claim in writing to the treasurer for costs, up to three months from the date of the event. For coffee or games nights, you do not need a receipt, but you do for a party or a barbecue. The back page of the programme gives more details on the claim limits and where to send the claims.
|
| Q. | Is anyone excluded from joining Harrow Coffee Pot? |
| A. |
Harrow Coffee Pot is all about meeting new people, having the opportunity to try new things and making new friends and acquaintances. Therefore, it is open to everyone, whatever their background. Everyone is welcome. The club and events aim to be of universal appeal and are not closed to anyone.
|
| Q. | Will I be expected to put on events as soon as I join? |
| A. | No. As a new member you should not feel pressurised at all to put on events. If and when you feel that you would like to, of course the programme planners would be delighted to hear from you. You will find that as you attend events and your face becomes known, you will be asked if you would like to host an event, but you are perfectly entitled to say 'no' and nobody will think any the worse of you. |
| Q. | Do I have to host events in my home? |
| A. | Some members feel concerned about holding an event in their own home. Harrow Coffee Pot understands these concerns and wishes that every member to feel happy about putting on an event in their own home. Firstly, there is no pressure to put on a home event, it is purely your decision. Secondly, you are able to make an event bookable, this way you can know who will be coming beforehand. Thirdly, if you have made the event bookable and you feel uncomfortable with a certain member of the club, you are able to refuse that member when they call to book in to your event - you do not have to give a reason for refusal. Finally, all home events during the week are expected to finish by 11pm and members are requested to leave by this time. You can ask any club member to stay behind at the event until everyone has left, thereby ensuring that you will not be left alone with any other member of the club. At any time, you can contact a member of the committee, which is a mixture of male and female members, to discuss any concerns. |
| Q. | I only have a small house, is there any way that I can limit the number of people who attend my events? |
| A. |
If you need to restrict the number of members attending the event at your house, you can make the event bookable. This means that members have to call you by a specified date and this enables you to control the number of members attending your event.
|
| Q. | What are the best events for new members to go to? |
| A. |
It is usually best to sample a variety of events early on. One event per week is chosen by the Committee as particularly suitable; these are advertised on the programme with the wording “newer members especially welcome”, and will be attended by a Committee member. Quiz nights, home events and pub events can be good ice-breakers, to get to know a few people, for example, before meeting in a more public venue. It is best to avoid making a party your first event, as it is much harder for the host to ensure you are included. For similar reasons, Committee-sponsored discos (held in function rooms) are not always ideal for the newcomer. However, if you are comfortable with getting to know people initially in these environments then you are always more than welcome to attend. |
| Q. | How is my membership application processed? |
| A. |
When a prospective member applies for membership, their application is discussed at the first committee meeting after application. The whole committee then decides whether or not to accept the member into the club and the decision is based primarily on 4 criteria:
Once the committee has made their decision, a letter of acceptance (or refusal) is sent to the member welcoming them to the club along with a copy of the clubs constitution and the current months programme. Very seldom is membership refused unless the above criteria are not met; however, the committee reserves the right to refuse a membership application without giving a reason. |
